Guide to Men’s Accessories – Part VII: Fedoras

by JB

An exaggerated fedora

Did I say men’s accessories? Well, typically and traditionally – fedoras were worn by men.

There are tons of hat styles (Homburg: no snapbrim; Panama: straw hat; Bowler: helmet-like) yet I’d like to focus on fedoras as they are a favorite of mine and quite trendy.

What characterizes a fedora is a “snapbrim” or a brim that is flipped downward in front. Therefore, the most stylish way to wear a fedora is to wear it slightly lower on one side only, to extentuate the snapbrim. Ladies should wear it lower as to cover one eye.

These days, fedoras are rarely worn with a 3 peice suit or double breasted suit as in the late 1800 and early 1900’s. Unless, you are going to a costume party, I wouldn’t recommend it – you will look like you just stepped out of a black and white movie. However, if that’s the look you are going for – the more power to you.

Fedoras are now a fun casual accessory worn by a select few. Only a few you may ask? Well, fedoras and hats in general are not for everyone. You need the right head and face shape for it. Big head? Wide face? No cigar. Hats suit those with longer faces and oval heads. Having said that, this is a general statement – you just need to find the right type of hat that will suit you – perhaps you may suit a newspaper boy cap instead?

It’s all about having a lot of confidence and then trying on various hats to see which one is proportionate to your body frame and face shape.

I fully agree with the “hat needs to suit the face” thing. Don’t be afraid to spend hours trying on multiple hats to see if they suit you. Bring a friend that you trust with you who is not afraid to tell you that you look like a potato head. It will save you from looking silly later.

Any chance you could do a post in the future on hat terminology? Or different types of hats and their names?
