It’s my Day too – Part XV: RSVP or Die

by JB

On most Mondays, Jessie will be taking over the blog to discuss his wedding planning from a male prospective.

Wow! I have never witnessed such organization in my life!

A few weeks back my fiance e-mailed me the first draft excel sheet of our wedding invitation list. I opened the e-mail and felt puzzled, happy and scared as I went through the wedding list for an hour.

I was puzzled because I never knew this much organization was involved in simply inviting people. I was happy because now I had someone in my life that had a unique and valuable skill that I did not possess. Finally I was scared at future organizational discussions; would she have our unborn children’s lives all planned out?

My brilliant and forthcoming fiance could not and would not wait any longer for our dire attempts to buy/order cards from India at the fraction of the cost of getting them done here. So we, SHE thought shopping around the hood would be a better idea. In the end “Micheals” had a do it yourself invitation kit that she found ON SALE. I think it was more the creation idea that intrigued her; because she went out and bought a colour printer; even after I had suggested Kinko’s.

After many labour intensive hours that should have been contracted out to India, the final product truly reflects a product made out of love.

A few pointers that we learned along the way:

  • Plain and simple go along way vs. tacky and colourful.
  • DIY kits can be inexpensive yet very labour intensive, ensure you have a quality colour printer.
  • In order to get to the step of creating invitations, all venues must be confirmed and a wedding invitee list should be complete with full names and addresses.
  • For RSVP cards, write a number on the back that corresponds with the person being invited (on excel) so that you can keep track of incoming RSVP’s.
